Buying a Building...
The Bicycle Kitchen has started a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising a down payment for a permanent space. Our current lease runs out in May 2012, and then we will need a new home. We feel this is the next logical step for our organization in becoming a permanent fixture serving Los Angeles.
By owning the space in which we do our work, we will be able to reduce our operating expenses in the long-term and, as a result, increase our capacity to provide services to our community and contribute to the expansion of cycling in Los Angeles in a range of innovative ways including increasing our capacity for workshops, providing more formal mechanics training and leadership skills continuing to provide our current services, and continuing to never turn anyone away for lack of funds.
We serve the East Hollywood community, a highly diverse community of 51,000 with a median income of less than $30,000. We also attract clientele from all over Los Angeles, as well as cyclists visiting from all over the globe. During our open hours you will find a wide range of cyclists--from local teenagers to indigent folks trying to get back on their feet, to thirty-something "hipsters" to die hard commuters immigrant day laborers and families with children.
We ask for your support and to join us in this momentous endeavor. So far, we have been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Metabolic Studio (a direct charitable activity of the Annenberg Foundation, led by the Artist and Foundation Director, Lauren Bon), and we have raised $40,000 from our own fundraising activities which include conducting workshops, providing services at Ciclavia and Tour de Fat, and FOK Rock (our music fundraiser). We need to fund raise an additional $30,000 to make our mortgage manageable, and the more we raise the faster we can own our own space. Your donations will help to reduce our dependence on bank loans and serve to make us a stronger, more vibrant organization as we achieve our goal of obtaining a permanent home.
